ABSENCES & MAKE-UP WORK

Sickness, doctor’s appointments, etc. are common among children.  They miss a day of school as a result.  The student will have the chance to make up any missed work, BUT IT IS THEIR RESPONSIBILITY to get assignment when they return to school.

DON”T FORGET TO SEND AN EXCUSE FOR THE ABSENCE!!

HOMEWORK

Homework will be given Monday-Thursday nights.  This is a continuation of class lessons.  It is NOT busy work.  Please assist your child in completing assignments.  If a student does not have their homework assignment, they will pull a card.
  Some suggestions are:
v  Provide a quiet place for homework time.
v  Avoid any distractions (TV, video games, etc.) that may divert child’s attention.
v  Check your child’s homework.  See what he/she is doing.
v  Give help when needed, but don’t do the homework yourself.  You child is the one learning, not you.

Parents, it is important that you are aware of your child’s progress in the 5th grade!  Please make an effort attend all scheduled meetings and events.  Call or come by and check on your child anytime!  Your input is VERY important for success!!

Accelerated Reader

Each student is required to read and take an Accelerated Reader Test by Friday of every week.  Studies show that regular reading increases overall reading performance, comprehension, and fluency.  Not being at grade level in Reading affects all areas of a child’s education.

Students are expected to read 20 minutes every night.  Reading Logs are to be filled out and turned in each Friday with the name of reading material, time read, and parent’s signature.  Please make sure your child reads and sign your child’s Reading Log each night.

CLASS NOVEL READING

We will be reading 4 or 5 historical novels.  We will be viewing movies based on these novels.  Some of these family movies may be rated PG.  A permission letter to allow your child to watch these visual aids will be sent prior to the showing of the first movie.  A student may NOT watch a PG rated movie without permission from the parent.  The child will be given an alternate assignment in a different room for the showing if permission is not granted.  I preview ALL movies to make sure they are age appropriate.
         A NOTE FROM ME . . .

I am happy your child is in my class this year!  I believe every student has the potential to achieve.  Education is my top priority and I have high expectations for each child.  Academic success is a TEAM EFFORT between you--the parent, your child, and me.

This will be a year of excitement and growth.  We will continue expanding concepts already learned in previous grades and cover new objectives in the curriculums of Reading, Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.  We will also begin preparing your child for the transition to middle school.  Every effort will be made to keep you aware of what’s happening in our class.
You will be receiving many forms to fill out at the beginning of the school year.  Please take the time to do so and return them in a timely manner.
Class begins at 8:30 AM.  Please make every effort to have your child at school on time.
It will be a busy year!  Please call me at school with any concerns or comments.  It’s going to be a wonderful year and I am looking forward to helping your child be the best that he/she can be.
